Blue Shield helps patients connect with Gov't Programs, like a 9 to a 10

New program assists members in obtaining government benefits

Blue Shield is launching a new program to assist your clients’ employees who may be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and/or Medicare benefits.

Beginning in June, Social Service Coordinators, Inc., a Blue Shield contracted vendor, will contact members identified as having SSDI-qualifying disabilities and Blue Shield will contact members identified as having end-stage renal disease (ESRD), to offer them assistance in applying for federal benefits. The goal of this program is to educate members about the benefits of programs administered by the Social Security Administration and to provide interested members with an advocate to help pursue these benefits.

Members who qualify for SSDI may:

  • Receive assistance with the complicated application process.
  • Decrease financial liability on covered services when the secondary plan
(Blue Shield) covers the part of the member's claim not covered by the primary payer (Medicare).
  • Possibly receive monthly SSDI cash payments and protection of their
Social Security retirement benefits while away from the workforce.
