In a classic gov't move, a local school district dropped a set employees down to 3/4s time. Why? According to the new O-care rules, they won't have to provide health insurance, AND it'll save them money on their Workers Comp insurance. Oh, the Irony of a Local Gov't adjusting to a Fed Gov't ruling. Ha!
We're seeing a 30-40% rate increase in Workers Comp rates. Oh, and your Health Insurance should double in 2013. That's if your employer keeps it...
Happy now?

Obamacare, and the Rugby Player: Health Insurance Rates to Double in the next 2 years...
If you're under 40, and playing rugby, you're health insurance will DOUBLE in the next 2 years...
Now, if you're employer provides health insurance, and there are more than 50 employees in your company, expect benefits to either be dropped, your hours reduced, or people (maybe YOU) getting laid off.
But Wait! Didn't Consumers see 1.5 Billion in tangible savings because of Obamacare? Yes, they did.
That money came from somewhere... And, as long as insurance companies operate on a profit, that cost will either be passed on as future premium increases, or lower payments to medical service providers. Also, the O-care rules force insurance companies to age rate at x3 instead of x5 for older people. Thus, the young will pay for the old.
What can a Rugby Player Do? Get a supplemental plan for Rugby if you have employer health insurance. Do NOT rely on USA Rugby's program, as it's NOT designed to act as a primary health plan, and you'd only be screwing other rugby players who follow the rules. (Yes, you should NOT be playing if you don't have primary health insurance...) If you're pissed that your health insurance rates are increasing, well,... that's a political problem... figure that out yourself.

Attention Ruggers in: KS, SC, FL, WY, NE, SD, LA, TX, WI, AR, ME, IN, IA, GA, and OH
If your state was listed in the title, in 2014, you'll be getting your health insurance directly from the Federal Gov't. Be grateful that your State Gov't has a clue....[hat tip: Insureblog.com]
These states have REFUSED to implement the health insurance exchanges, thus utilizing their refusal to be a part of the expanded Medicaid program offered within Obamacare. This was the genius of Roberts Ruling on Obamacare. The States, who basically run and pay for Medicaid, get to keep their Fed Money, without the Feds using a "carrot and stick" to get them to accept Obamacare. Love it!
Here, I'll list 'em again:
KS, SC, FL, WY, NE, SD, LA, TX, WI, AR, ME, IN, IA, GA, and OH
All of you playing Rugby need this as a supplement (You got $3-5,000 laying around in case a prop falls on you?).
And, for the states listed above, you're employer will NOT be faced any penalties for not providing health insurance, but yet, you'll have access to Federally subsidized and guarantee issue plans... My guess, your health insurance premiums will remain stable, and as more Kaiser's come online (and they will, only way to control costs is to control the Docs, Nurses and Hospitals) you'll see employers FLYING to these states. (Please note: All of these states are right-to-work states, except WI, ME, and OH... that'll change...)
If your Boss is smart (Or, if you're the Boss), what she'll do is offer each employe $XXX.XX per month, and let them buy their own insurance. Less for singles, more for families... Those with state-based exchanges, she'll just pay the $2,000 per employee, or drop your hours down below 40/week, or both.
Employers are NOT stupid. They want to make profit. Figure that out. Also, they know that a company with benefits will attract better employees. Benefits are good, for everybody.
Now, if you're a Rugby player NOT listed above... You'll be paying a penalty to the IRS, or forced to purchase shit health insurance which, and this will happen, will EXCLUDE sports... Trust me. It's gonna get nasty.
So, congrats to the States who told the Feds to GFY....

Fitness: Wins 80% of Matches, and could lower your Insurance Premiums
Fitness is the key to most matches....I don't know how many times a Rugby coach stated that the All Blacks score 80% of their tries in the last 20 minutes of a match.
Well, Obamacare actually makes it EASIER to charge smokers and those who are over-weight MORE for their health insurance. In a classic Gov't Boondoggle, not only can your employer make you pay more for health insurance, but also for the Wellness program they decided that you need. Lovely...
What'll suck for most male Rugby players: We are usually "Obese" by the Definition via Body-Mass Index, or BMI. I'm 5'10", 195#, which puts me at 29 BMI, over-weight. Bullshit.
There's hope: SeaChangeHealth.com is a company that will help you pay LESS for health care while you get healthier.
Fitness. Should work in your favor, unless you work at Walmart.

Your Doctor is an Idiot...when it comes to Insurance, at least...
I'm finding a SAD trend in health insurance claims.
Rugby players get hurt. They go Doctors and ERs and such. They pay a co-pay, or some money down towards a deductible. Then, the medical service provider "codes" what was done to the Wee Winger.
The Medical Service Providers are NOT coding correctly considering the new LAWS for health insurance.
Example: Preventative care is now fully covered bc of Obamacare. However, Doc offices are "coding" it under the old system, leaving huge bills for the patient.
Certain exams are to be covered completely, but the Medical Service provider usually does NOT code correctly.
Remember, the Insurance company is NOT incented to REcode your medical bills.
Ergo, either you get it done, or you pay the difference.
Idiots abound. Don't be one of them. Take an ACTIVE part in your health, health care, and health insurance. Remember, if we go to an all gov't system, imagine trying to get money out of them for an MD's mistake...

Coding and Preventive Care: Kinda like the Laws of the Ruck
Okay, so who can explain to me what a "Ruck" is?
Silence... Why? Because it depends on the Refs feelings that day. Richie McCaw is a PRIME example of bending the Law.
So, Obamacare made all preventive care FREE. So, why are MDs and Hospitals mis-coding (that's the magic number they place on the bills, so that the insurance company knows what to pay...) preventive care? Balance billing?
Or, maybe they don't see the Law that day.
Remember, unless YOU take an active role in your health care and health insurance, you will get Popped for bills you legally don't deserve.

Avoid Obamacare by joining a Religion... Seriously...
You can opt out of the Mandatory Purchase of Health Insurance (eff 2014) for religious reasons. Is that not the most INSANE thing the Gov't has ever done? And, too bad Rugby is not a religion.
Sadly, no...
Ergo, before 2014, I'll start shopping religions so I can keep the coverage that I want, instead of being forced to purchase what the Gov't tells me to.
How do we make Rugby a religion?

Health Care is NOT Health Insurance: Rugby Players will need the coming two-tiered Health care system
So, Massachusetts has lots of people insured, but nobody can get to a doctor.
And, Obamacare is exactly like it.
As a Rugby player, do you want to WAIT to see a physician? How long are you willing to be off the pitch?
Rugby Players will pay into a different plan, my guess is a Kaiser like private system. Why?
We're not good at waiting in lines....

Rugby is NOT Free: Um, just like Health Care and Health Insurance
Funny how rugby players find their dues money when it comes to getting game time on Saturday...
A strong club leadership will keep a player off the pitch if they haven't paid their dues.
Now that the feds have regulated health Insurance (not health care, Obamacare does NOTHING to health care...), you're going to see a greater amount of out-of-pocket. Yes, you'll spend MORE money for "universal" health care. Lovely...
Now, some assume you're not prepared for this reality. And, some insurance carriers and prescription drugs companies are actively acting like assholes, hoping you won't notice. But, anyone who knows math as well as my 4 yr. old Son, realizes that the MONEY AIN'T THERE...
Now, if you get hurt, you'll find the money. If you're tires blow out, you'll find the money. Rent? Yep, you'll find the money. And, you might take an active role in finding the best price, which is what consumer driven health care is all about.
And, now, you get to do it for your health care... welcome to paying your club dues...times a 1,000.

Income subsidies, and why Obamacare loses it's feet at the Ruck
A friend enrolled in the local Health San Francisco program. She stated that it wasn't "free" and she had to pay $100/month for the program.
Really? 30+ Female in Northern California had to pony up $100 per month for a health care program? She could afford $300/month, but that might cut into her lifestyle. We have it so good in America, most don't even realize. (Please visit Liberia as soon as possible.)
Luckily, she went online and saw the real insurance rates. Balking, she took the local program.
I got to thinking about the income subsidy in Obamacare. Here's what I found.
So, a family with $30,000 in income gets $20,000 from the Gov't for health insurance? The Insurance Companies LOVE LOVE LOVE this...
Obamacare loses it's feet at the Ruck because families will artificially deflate their incomes to get more subsidy, and the insurance fat cats make MILLIONS in premiums. I personally have a tax strategy for when my income hits $250,000 to reduce my taxes. (And, every one else who can utilize a loop hole to minimize taxes will USE THAT LOOPHOLE.)
The medical service industry: Doctors, Hospitals, and Nurses do not want price controls or cost controls, because that would hurt their income. They lobbied hard for Obamacare too...
Even worse, 1 in 10 won't enroll/sign-up for any program, but will still visit ERs and Doctors. Taxpayers will pay for them.
Please understand this: The only way for all this to truly come down is to ration the limited amount of Docs, Hospitals, and Nurses. A two-tiered health care system will emerge, just like Europe. The best and brightest will follow the money. No honor among thieves.
Who will protest? No one. No one is protesting now. This is simple crony capitalism, which ultimately leads to socialism. Always has, always will.
If you take Gov't money, you become dependent on that. I would, that's why I don't ever take gov't help. If you believe the Gov't should help you, then, you will find yourself in a line at the DMV to get your stitches.
Obamacare sucks. Falls over the ruck, doesn't keep it's feet, and is, bad for Rugby.

Obamacare 1 year later
Here's a few facts, as things are now, after Obamacare passed 1 year ago:
Welcome to the two-tiered system. Stay healthy, don't get a degenerative or chronic disease, because you'll be in line either at the DMV or the Post Office. Oh, and I'll bet that the State plans won't cover organized sports.
That's right, no Rugby.
Unless you have money...
- Almost impossible to get Child-Only Policies in America (CA, Blue Shield, rates x3 normal)
- Highlight: Fiscally responsible, IF they cut 500 Billion from Medicare. They'll never do that. Ergo, it adds Trillions of expenditures, kills jobs, and entices employers to drop health insurance coverage.
- Pharmaceutical Costs have risen. Because Big Pharma KNOWS that the Feds will ultimately foot the bill, therefore they'll charge whatever they can. They'll NEVER publish a wholesale price, or what the price is in Europe or Canada.
- Number of Un-Insureds has INCREASED!!! Nobody's jumping onto the State plans... Why?

Obamacare Ruling in FL = ELVs
Remember, the ELVs, to improve the game. Nobody cared.
Remember, the Obamacare, to improve health care and health insurance. Nobody cared.
Now the ruling FL: Again, nobody cared.
Why? Because, bottom of a ruck, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for you health care and health insurance. We'll get a lovely SCOTUS ruling, and move ever faster towards a two-tiered health care system.
Why do you think I added business insurance, personal lines, league and team insurance, disability, professional liability, etc. etc. etc. to my business?

You can no longer pay for beer with a debit card...
Imagine if that were true, Rugby players would lead an empty pint glass revolution in the streets!
(As far as RuckingInsurance.com knows, you can still pay for beer using a debit card.)
However, Obamacare didn't want you using a debit card for certain purchases, when attached to an Flexible Spending Account, Health Savings Account, or Health Reimbursement Arrangement.
Well, they've flipped on that one. And, here's why the law sucks. In Obamacare, you can't make certain purchases with a debit card. But, the Department of Health and Human Services and/or the IRS (difficult to determine who's really in charge...) can waive, change, implement, or not implement, anything inside Obamacare. This time, it was the IRS.
Who's accountable? Who's in charge? What will change next?
Rugby players should care because our ability to get back on the pitch in a timely manner is jeopardized by a number of Obamacare items.
Imagine not getting your pain meds after knee surgery... (Oh Beer!!!!) Imagine having to get Gov't approval for your shoulder MRI...
Now, about that revolution...

Rugby Training Canceled: Could be your knee surgery too...
If we go full on Obamacare, expect this to happen if you're in the lower tier of the eventual two tiered healthcare system.
Remember, before Obamacare, 85% of this country had health insurance. I expect that to decline, rapidly.
Oh, and in Tier 2, expect to rated according to risk.
I hate it when Rugby Training is canceled due to rain.... makes me think about bad things...

Cutting Commissions and Raising Rates does not help you Score Tries!!!
If you tell me I make less money, and, you tell me that my customers will need to pay more, I'll find another company.
This is why Obamacare is dangerous.
If you're healthy, don't worry, you'll be fine. HSA plans aren't going away any time soon.
If you have a "pre-existing condition", you're screwed. Sorry, but that's the truth of it.
(If you think single payer will solve this, you're partially right. If you have money, you'll enter the top tier of the two-tier healthcare system that will develop in the US. If you don't even have money for rugby club dues... you are SOL.)

Tackler has all rights to the ball, except...
Rugby laws are open to interpretation. That's the ref sets the tone early, (or doesn't most of the time), and the players modify playing style to fit the refs vision of the game.
Especially at the breakdown/ruck area.
Obamacare made a great many laws. Well, it appears that some don't have to follow those laws. Consider McDonald's and these other companies to the Richie MaCaw's of Health insurance. They don't have to follow the laws, even though everybody else does.
Kinda like Congressional Members don't pay into Soc Sec, or have the same health insurance as we do. Fascinating...
Anyway, Obamacare is now unraveling... Rugby lives on, and you still need to get insured...
That's just the way it is.... for now.

Employer dropping Benes? Here's what you do...
Your employer will drop his benefits. Why? Because the Obamacare penalty is cheaper, and/or, the Boss will go to an Health Reimbursement Arrangement, avoiding both the hassle of group health, and the penalty.
Here's what you need to do if you have pre-existing condition that prevents you from getting individual traditional health insurance.
Now, other plans exist that could help with Rugby injuries, so don't fret. And, remember, in 2014, and if Obamacare is not repealed or de-funded, you can buy health insurance AFTER a prop falls on you.
Doesn't make sense, but that's how it is...

Declines, High-Risk Pools, and the Future of Obamacare: What your knee surgery means...
One of the biggest challenges of insuring Rugby players for health insurance is pre-existing conditions.
ACL surgery, AC joint separations, and, Rugby Gods Forbid, back problems... (In CA, DON'T mention that you go to a chiropractor, or you'll be declined...)
Anyway, here's what will happen if you are declined, and forced to go in on a state-based high risk pool.
Health Insurance companies get KILLED on group insurance, because they have to take everybody regardless of health. IMHO, I have no stats. But I bet they make a nice profit on individual. Ergo, Obamacare requires everyone buy health insurance, and creates federally subsidized high risk pools, sometimes doubling upon an existing program in a given state. The buying mandate will be found unconstitutional, and the health insurance companies KNOW this. But, they'll get a nice reach-around administering the high risk pools. All the bureaucratic red tape profits, and no risks.
Win Lose. They win, you lose.
Employers will drop group benes, either pay the penalty, OR institute an Health Reimbursement Arrangement. (HRA). You'll buy individual health, or go in the pool.
If you clicked on the link, you'll see a $2500 base deductible. You can get around this using an Accident Indemnity plan. However, I suspect the rate of the risk pools will be high, and I'm sure about the subsidies details...
Confused? Good. If you vote left, you have no one to blame but yourself. If you vote right, vote libertarian!
Your pre-existing condition won't keep you off the pitch, but it will cost you more in time and money.
