Governor Jerry Brown, Insurance Agent

If you have employee sponsored health insurance, here's what will happen in 2014.

I'm curious to see if General Liability Carriers will begin quoting contact sports again (Only 2 markets remain), now that we ALL have health insurance... or, at least... should have.

I predict:

  1. Massive Increase in sales of Supplemental Policies like VBA's 24h Accident Medical Cover.  The Feds will make you pay, deductibles, co insurance... got $5,000 lying around?
  2. Prop-sized changes in Workers Comp, since everybody has Health Insurance, right?
  3. Scrum-sized Increases in Health Insurance Premiums... sick people, old people.

I wouldn't be surprised if all Excess A&H (policies for sports leagues to provide EXCESS, not primary, health coverage for injuries related to the sport) disappear.

Playing Fields: Satisfying Parks'n'Rec, ISDs, and Municipalities...

To get a field to play on, you typically need to present of Certificate of Insurance, or COI, to the entity that owns/maintains the field.  Most venue operators want to know that there is an Additional Insured endorsement on the policy, thus extending coverage to both the renter and venue.  Example is the classic "Slip and Fall", they sue everybody, but the renter's insurance covers both the Rugby Team and the Venue/Field operator.

99% of the time, no problem.  Most Sports General Liability Packages have some form of Additional Insured.  AIG asks for a written contract to extend Additional Insured statues to the venue.

Additional Named Insured is NOT the same, even though some places require this wording.  Why?

Additional Insured vs Additional Named Insured, best pdf on it here.

Sports GLs are hesitant to extend Additional Named Insured to a venue, if they'll do it at all.  Risk.  Of course, while you're on the field, the venue should be protected.  But, if you're NOT using the pitch, why should the venue be covered?  (Additional Named Insured tend to be needed for fiduciary reasons...)  Insurance companies, while they take on risk for a premium, they still don't like it...

If your field/pitch administrator is asking for special language, call us... We'll at least walk you through it.

Ins Cos Collect Premiums, NOT Pay Claims

If you have General Liability for your business, or professional career, expect a rate increase in 2013.

The poor, and destitute, insurance companies didn't make DOUBLE DIGIT returns on their investments, so...

...expect YOUR costs to increase to make up the difference.

Solution:  Make your broker/agent market your risk, aggressively... Very Aggressively.

...Like a Rugby Player.

Getting a Pitch: COIs, Additional Insureds, and Named Additional Insureds

If you're a club administrator, read.

Here's Wikipedia's definition of Additional Insured.

In order to secure a pitch to play/train on, Municipalities, Park'n'Rec Departments, Churches, and 100s of other entities who have dirt to rent, what some form of Commercial General Liability in place for the renter, and want to be an "Additional Insured."  Some even go so far as to demand specific language for the endorsement on the Named Insured's policy.

Lot's of confusion between this language, Additional Insurance, and Named Additional Insured.  All a Club Admin cares about is having a fricking area of grass to play/train on, right?

Wrong.

Liability Insurance is all about paying a sum that the insured is legally obligated to pay, or that the insurer has agreed to pay, as damages to others as a result of the insured's negligence.

If the insurer hasn't agreed to pay, you're hosed.

Most Sports CGL policies have a provision called "Blanket Additional Insured by Written Contract", meaning you sign a contract with the venue, and your CGL covers the Venue.

Simple question:  Does yours?

Tomorrow:  Why a COI (Certificate of Insurance) tells you pretty much nothing...

CA Workers Comp rates: CA tries to help the Long Term Disabled...

Workers Comp rates:  Getting Kicked Up, Again...

Little claims don't do much, other than raise your ExMod, or close potential workers comp markets to your company.  Yes, that's bad, but, you always have SCIF in CA... so that's kinda good...kinda...

The Kickers are SHOCK Losses and the Long Term Disabled... Shock losses are massive claims due to gross injury, paid all at once.  LTD can have 1,000s of causes, but ultimately, LTD is a massive claim, but paid out over years and years.

Hopefully, these guys will get it sorted.

Where will you SCORE/GET HIT with Insurance Costs in 2013...

If you're looking to save money on Insurance this 2013, here's how:

1.  Consolidate all your personal lines with one carrier.  "Huh?"  Call me.
2.  Get a Rugby Supplemental/Accident Only plan.  Got $10,000 laying around?
3.  If you OWN a business:  General Liability and Business Auto rates are good right now... Again, Call me.

Where you're going to get HIT with Insurance Costs in 2013:

1.  Workers Comp:  Business Owners, the Prop will Fall on You...  Have you checked your ExMod lately?
2.  Health Insurance:  Expect either your employer to ask you for a bigger contribution, drop benefits entirely, or just a simple 30-40% increase... Yes, your LineOut Lifters just dropped you...
3.  OLD Ruggers:  Long Term Care insurance.  This is for the 50+ crowd.  Get it, NOW.

Tax-wise, $1,000,000,000,000 (that's 1 Trillion), gets taken this year by the Feds to pay for Obamacare, which doesn't technically start til 2014. Plus, your wages will get pinged another 2%.  So, you'll have less money in 2013 if all else stays the same.

Your only recourse is to score multiple tries... Or, make more money.

No Health Insurance, and Jacked UP Workers Comp rates...2013!

In a classic gov't move, a local school district dropped a set employees down to 3/4s time.  Why? According to the new O-care rules, they won't have to provide health insurance, AND it'll save them money on their Workers Comp insurance.  Oh, the Irony of a Local Gov't adjusting to a Fed Gov't ruling.  Ha!

We're seeing a 30-40% rate increase in Workers Comp rates.  Oh, and your Health Insurance should double in 2013.  That's if your employer keeps it...

Happy now?

Blue Shield CA Kicks Ups Health Insurance Rates

Dude?

So, you're accepting less people, and those you do take, you're asking for more money?

RI is FOR "Medicare for All."  Yeah, you read that right... Why?  Because of three reasons:

1.  Supplemental Insurance, like VBA, will become popular, especially with Rugby Players.
2.  Concierge Medicine, like One Medical, will become popular, especially with Rugby Players.
3.  Local City and State Budgets will be saved, like Stockton or Detroit, since the health care portions of gov't employee contracts will go the way of "Pulling Down Mauls."
4.  General Liability Insurance, like what you need to get a pitch, won't have an Accident & Health Insurance requirement, saving rugby associations buku money.

Blue Shield CA, and Blue Cross, are not long for this world.  Get on Kaiser, and/or Supplement with VBA.

Monday Morning Bruises: You PAY for your OWN mistakes...

Ah, sitting at the desk on Monday morning, less than 48 hours after 80 minutes of rugby and countless beers...  A precious feeling!

Now, the mistakes you made on the pitch... there's no one but you to blame... fact.

How the hell is this related to insurance?  Because many believe insurance is designed to pay for your mistakes.  No.  no.  NO!

Example:  General Liability is there in case you get sued.  Don't get sued, and you'll never use the insurance.  (IMHO, that's why you buy it...)  You can get sued without screwing up.

Another Example:  Deductibles on Health Insurance:  If you play rugby, and get hurt, you're going to pay for some part of the medical services, simply because you CHOSE to play.  "What do you mean that's not covered?"  Ha!

Final Example:  Cheap Auto Insurance.  You buy the cheapest shit out there, you get in an accident, car goes bye bye... "Wait?  I had insurance!"  Um, no, you had what your State required, and nothing more...

So, that bruise on your arm from a bad guy's thumb, or the rake on your leg from a prop's boot... your problem.

Obamacare, and the Rugby Player: Health Insurance Rates to Double in the next 2 years...

If you're under 40, and playing rugby, you're health insurance will DOUBLE in the next 2 years...

Now, if you're employer provides health insurance, and there are more than 50 employees in your company, expect benefits to either be dropped, your hours reduced, or people (maybe YOU) getting laid off.

But Wait!  Didn't Consumers see 1.5 Billion in tangible savings because of Obamacare?  Yes, they did.

That money came from somewhere... And, as long as insurance companies operate on a profit, that cost will either be passed on as future premium increases, or lower payments to medical service providers.  Also, the O-care rules force insurance companies to age rate at x3 instead of x5 for older people.  Thus, the young will pay for the old.

What can a Rugby Player Do?  Get a supplemental plan for Rugby if you have employer health insurance.  Do NOT rely on USA Rugby's program, as it's NOT designed to act as a primary health plan, and you'd only be screwing other rugby players who follow the rules.  (Yes, you should NOT be playing if you don't have primary health insurance...)  If you're pissed that your health insurance rates are increasing, well,... that's a political problem... figure that out yourself.

Business Owners: CGL and WC to increase in 2013...

Doing business properly insured will get more expensive in 2013.

From a Commercial General Liability perspective...  This is normal, since the market has gone SUPER soft in the last 3 years... just when I went full time... heh heh...  Remember, a CGL premium is based on revenues usually, and the 1,000s are multiplied by a rate, defined by what the business does.  I've seen classes at $12 rates down to $5 rates...  (Example:  If you make 100k, and the class rate is $12, you pay $1,200 for CGL, roughly, not including potential taxes and fees.  Imagine the rate drop to $5, and that's $500... make sense?)

So, the bounce up is normal.

From a Workers Compensation perspective...  Again, normal.  Good economy, lot's of players get into the market, cutting rates.  Economy goes to shit, claims go up, revenues dry up, and boom, workers comp rates go up.  We call this...economics... perhaps you've read about that in HS Civics class?

So, how do you keep the costs down, without exposure to lawsuits?  Easy....

...call me.

Attention Ruggers in: KS, SC, FL, WY, NE, SD, LA, TX, WI, AR, ME, IN, IA, GA, and OH

If your state was listed in the title, in 2014, you'll be getting your health insurance directly from the Federal Gov't.  Be grateful that your State Gov't has a clue....[hat tip:  Insureblog.com]

These states have REFUSED to implement the health insurance exchanges, thus utilizing their refusal to be a part of the expanded Medicaid program offered within Obamacare.   This was the genius of Roberts Ruling on Obamacare. The States, who basically run and pay for Medicaid, get to keep their Fed Money, without the Feds using a "carrot and stick" to get them to accept Obamacare.  Love it!

Here, I'll list 'em again:

KS, SC, FL, WY, NE, SD, LA, TX, WI, AR, ME, IN, IA, GA, and OH

All of you playing Rugby need this as a supplement (You got $3-5,000 laying around in case a prop falls on you?).

And, for the states listed above, you're employer will NOT be faced any penalties for not providing health insurance, but yet, you'll have access to Federally subsidized and guarantee issue plans... My guess, your health insurance premiums will remain stable, and as more Kaiser's come online (and they will, only way to control costs is to control the Docs, Nurses and Hospitals) you'll see employers FLYING to these states.  (Please note:  All of these states are right-to-work states, except WI, ME, and OH... that'll change...)

If your Boss is smart (Or, if you're the Boss), what she'll do is offer each employe $XXX.XX per month, and let them buy their own insurance.  Less for singles, more for families... Those with state-based exchanges, she'll just pay the $2,000 per employee, or drop your hours down below 40/week, or both.

Employers are NOT stupid.  They want to make profit.  Figure that out.  Also, they know that a company with benefits will attract better employees.  Benefits are good, for everybody.

Now, if you're a Rugby player NOT listed above... You'll be paying a penalty to the IRS, or forced to purchase shit health insurance which, and this will happen, will EXCLUDE sports... Trust me.  It's gonna get nasty.

So, congrats to the States who told the Feds to GFY....

Rugby Player Surgery: How you get back on the pitch...

A Prop Falls On You.  You need surgery.  Here's what you need BEFORE the injury, to be in place:

1.  VBA's 24h Accident Medical Program:  $2,500 to $25,000 in CASH to cover deductibles and co-insurance right NOW...

2.  A surgery center NOT associated with a major hospital chain.  Watch this.  Hat tip:  Reason.tv

3.  Decent Chiropractor who understands sports injuries, rehab, and insurance.

NOTICE I DID NOT say PRIMARY HEALTH INSURANCE... here's why....

[Note:  RuckingInsurance.com started with just health insurance.  Was 85% of our revenue.  Now it's under 7%... why?  It's a pain in the ass to sell, maintain, and they've dropped commissions 67% LESS than when we started.  Ergo, not worth our time to deal with... We ONLY sell Kaiser now...  All other carriers suck.]

You ain't gonna have any very soon.  Any 1/2 brained employer is going to drop your benefits, or just throw you a few hundred a month to go get your own... Don't like it?  Tough. Also, do NOT lean on any EXCESS medical insurance you get from your sports association... USAR(FU)'s included.... Those programs are NOT designed to cover you as a primary...

If you do have Primary Health Insurance, your deductibles and co-insurance won't cover most of the charges in the Hospital anyway... lovely huh!?!

It's time to CHANGE... You want to play Rugby?  Hockey?  GAA sports?  Whatever?  YOU NEED VBA's plan... period...

We just want to see you in the Rucks....

Sole Prop Disability: Acrobatic Dancer, Carpenter, Pro Rugby Player

Simple Question:  If you own a "one-person" business, and you can't work due to illness or injury, in how many weeks will you be thrown out of your house/apartment?

No, you can't get Workers Comp....or, can you?

Most Disability Insurance Companies will decline any "physical" occupations... This could be an acrobatic dancer, pest control sprayer, cabinet carpentry and installation, and even, PRO rugby player...

Guess what?  RuckingInsurance.com can ruck over that disability need...

If you're a good saver, I'll bet you can weather a 3 to 6 month "storm."  Good on you... but anything longer, and you're probably homeless... right?

Call us.  If I can get disability insurance for a PRO rugby player, I can cover your occupation too!

$25,000 Accident Injury Coverage: Get your card ONLINE!!!

I'm a huge, Huge, HUGE fan of VBA's 24h Accident Medical Coverage...

Why?  Because every client who has ever used the claims process LOVED it, and they've never quit.  Retention in the insurance world means that the policy works.

Up to $25,000, for your family, for about $100/month?  Even a Prop realizes that's a good deal.

VBA just announced that you can get your cards online, instead of waiting the usual 4-6 weeks for the packet to come in the mail... (yes, I know... dinosaurs sent mail...)  The link is emailed after you enroll.

Just one more reason...

"Way of the Warthogs" and "Rugby Santa"

Two years ago, the Oakland Warthogs coach, Ryan Burke, asked me for $$$ for practice jerseys. Two things have happened since then:  Rugby Santa was born! and became the TRY Donation Program

Second, the Oakland Warthogs became THE Example of how Youth Rugby is changing live for America's Inner-City youth.  Would you like to support the Documentary that chronicles the Warthogs shining rise in the Rugby World?

Back to TRY:  For two years, we've been gathering old jerseys, boots, shorts, balls, even a SCRUM Machine, and distributing the kit to youth teams in need.  Next, "The Girl" over at Scrumhalfconnection.com named the ongoing program TRY!  "Tomorrow's Rugby Youth..." I understand why Wendy married her!

Rucking along, RugbyAthletic.com, Pakiscorner.com, RugbyStrong.org, the old RugbyAmerica.org blog, AGiantsAwakens.com, Ruckie the Moose, and the PCRFU all get involved.

We've gotten donations from RA (TONS), Tennessee, Texas, CA (mostly Fog RFC and SFGG), Washington, and Oregon.  We've delivered donations to PA, CA, TX, TN, NC, NV, OK, and WA.

Now, USA Rugby has invited TRY to the 2013 Youth Development conference.

IMHO, Rugby is the last, best hope for American Youth, especially the under-served populations trapped inside America's inner cities...  Will you help us?

So, over the next few weeks, RI will be promoting Rugby Santa 2012 and the film "Way of the Warthogs"...

Give til it hurts....send us your beer money, your old jersey.... Email this blogpost to EVERYONE you've ever rucked...  Tell the World how much Rugby has changed YOUR life....

...because...Rugby is my Life.

Rugby Players Get Drunk, Lose Cell Phones

I coached a rugby player this year who lost their smartphone 4 times... that's once a quarter.

Remember, NO insurance program will pay for your missing phone... but, there are solutions...

Oh, and not getting stupid drunk is another one...
