Blue Shield will return $295 million by the end of 2011

Here's why I only sell Blue Shield CA:

We are pleased to announce a second give-back as part our 2 Percent Pledge commitment to customers and the community. This time we will return an estimated $295 million based on our 2011 net earnings by the end of the year.

We announced the 2 Percent Pledge in June, as part of our commitment to affordability. We pledged to limit our annual net income to 2 percent of revenue, and any year that we earn more than 2 percent net income, to return the difference to our customers and the community. We started this commitment with our net income earned in 2010, and this month we returned $180 million based on 2010 net earnings to your clients and our local communities.

For fiscal year 2011, the estimated $295 million will be given back in the following ways:
  • Approximately $283 million will be credited back to customers on their December bills. The credit amounts will be determined based on a percentage of their August 2011 dues and/or premiums.

    • Individual (including Medicare Supplement) and fully-insured group customers will each get a 54 percent credit against one month of dues/premiums.

    • Customers with whom we share risk, such as CalPERS, will each get an 18 percent credit against one month of dues/premiums.
Customers with continuous fully-insured coverage in the same eligible product from August 1 through December 1, 2011 (other than certain government programs, like Medicare Advantage and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans, whose contracts do not provide a way to give such credits) are eligible for the credit. The average credit will vary depending on the monthly premiums.

  • $10 million in additional funds will be awarded to provider groups that applied for grants to help them participate in Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) after our last pledge announcement.

  • $2 million will support a future community investment with more details to come.

I Sell Blue Shield in CA... Jill just got 3 pints from them!

Okay, so the title will get me in trouble.  But, I don't care.

I almost exclusively sell Blue Shield of CA as my "goto" health carrier.  Here's why:
Jill gets 3 more pints this month...

Blue Shield of CA is NOT FOR PROFIT... huge, huge difference, I believe, philosophically, on how health care and health insurance should be done in this country.

Politically Correct and Pointless Insurance Company Tricks

So, Blue Shield of CA, who is rumored to be leaving the Individual Family Market, has announced two politically correct and pointless gestures:

  1. Refunding 30% of 1 Months premium IF you stick around between May and October 2011
  2. Loosening Small Group Requirements because Kaiser is kicking its Ass....
  3. Pledging a 2% profit margin, for a NOT-FOR-PROFIT!!!???!!!!
[Details at BlueShieldCa.com, yippee!!!]

Now WSJ realizes that after announcing the CEO salary of 4+ Million Dollars, a pointless gesture was needed.

So, let's do some math. You're premium is $100/month. 6 months x $100/month = $600. And, you'll get 30% of ONE month's premium = $30.

That's only 5% of $600. 5%? Really? I get a better deal at the coffee kiosk around the corner from my office.

The small group enrollment is bullshit too, since Kaiser is kicking their ass. (RuckingInsurance.com is moving almost exclusively to Kaiser this year, based on premium rates, and out of pocket costs to the insured.)

And, finally, the 2% cap on "profits" for the not-for-profit. Huh? Your CEO made x4 more than others in comparable insurance companies. STFU.

Blue Shield of CA has suffered from the death spiral, no doubt. But, they should be buying medical service providers to control costs, not giving away silly small rebates, and paying execs...

How many kids could have been saved some pain with $3,000,000.00?

Blue Shield of CA getting out from under the Ruck...

Blue Shield of CA was my partner for years. They were not-for-profit, and I could get a human on the phone.

I keep hearing rumors that they are phasing Individual and Family Plans. Fine.

You'll be getting quote from Kaiser and HealthNet now at RuckingInsurance.com. IMHO, Kaiser will come ROARING back once Obamacare goes full force. They own their medical service providers, so they can effectively control costs.

This is not a slight to Blue Shield of CA. They've been getting booted at the bottom of the Ruck for years. Good on them for taking so much abuse for so long...

Why Rugby Players shouldn't fill out quote forms online..

Rugby players are aggressive A-type personalities who don't like regular people.

Regular people suck.

A friend tried to get some online quotes to compare what I had sent her regarding Blue Shield of California.  She was "pissed" that "a bunch of bozos" called her.  That's because her name and contact info was sold to 10-20 insurance agents and/or agencies.  My guess is that only 20% ever get the balls to call.

I use Blue Shield because:
  • They're a Non-profit company.  No shareholders to keep happy with profits
  • I have a relationship with an underwriter, and can get info, needed documents, and signatures quickly to them.  BSCA worked hard to create an online system to get apps completed quickly.
  • I have a relationship with Claims.  I can get a human on the phone.  Freakin' priceless.
So, feel free to check my numbers.  I don't care.  If you have a clue, and don't want Bozos bothering you, you'll do business with me.

Plus, you may get to tackle me one day...doubtful...but maybe.

Blue Shield of CA allows online billing changes

Joining the 20th Century, Blue Shield of CA has added an online customer service platform. You can now make billing changes ONLINE.

About freakin' time...

I love Blue Shield of CA because of the relationships that I've developed with the staff there. The relationship is the key, not the price per month.
