You can't go into a Rugby bar, and not meet some yahoo who tells you that he was an All Black, or a Springbok, or played for whatevertheclub...
Sadly, the industry I have found myself in is BLANKETED with pricks pretending to be something they're not. Here's a few tips:
1. Beware of unsolicited contact: If someone calls you saying that "Bob thought it was a good idea that we meet" IMMEDIATELY call Bob and ask. 9 times out of 10, Bob said no such thing. People are massively private and do appreciate unwanted solicitations.
2. Beware of Irrelevant Questions: If you get to a quote stage, the Agent doesn't need your husbands driver's license number to complete an application on YOU. Trust your gut, if something's not right, tell the agent to back off.
3. Don't be afraid to call the Agents boss. If he says he's with Company XYZ, call the local office and verify.
4. Don't be afraid to call the Department of Insurance. The DOI exists to protect you from scammers. Every Insurance agent, at least in CA, must have their CA license on EVERY piece of marketing material. Call your state's DOI and ask if there have been any complaints.
5. Finally, don't give in to high pressure sales. The interweb is a great tool to discover info regarding insurance. Are you absolutely sure you need to buy _________? Heck, just two weeks ago, you didn't know this guy, or that you were "underinsured."
Most of the time, I find people with too much insurance. It's true!
And, I never, never, ever, call a referral. You want to do business with me, you contact me.
And, you best play Rugby!
